Overview

Asthma patients used a mobile app to log daily symptoms, triggers, and medication use. Their data was synced with an electronic medical record (EMR) and shared with their care team of doctors and nurses. I designed the dashboard and design library that allowed providers to monitor patient health, identify risk levels, and triage patients more effectively.

Audience:

  • Patients managing asthma symptoms
  • Care teams of doctors, nurses, and hospital staff

My Role: UX/UI Designer — dashboard design, design library

Deliverables:

  • Dashboard with scatter plot visualization to track “good, ok, bad” days
  • Mobile app that engaged patients in consistent symptom tracking
  • Design library with reusable UI components for speed and consistency

The Challenge

How might we help medical providers make fast, accurate decisions based on patient-reported data?

Key goals:

  • Track symptoms, triggers, and medication usage
  • Display clear, actionable insights
  • Support care teams in triaging patients by urgency

The Solution

  • Dashboard: Customizable panels with patient info, population trees, and scatter plot visualizations to compare health factors
  • Application: Inviting interface to encourage patients to record symptoms and stay engaged
  • Design System: Centralized library of typography, icons, and UI components for rapid iteration and smooth developer handoff

The Process

  • Conducted research on asthma care, patient experiences, and best practices
  • Created affinity maps and prioritized features using the MoSCoW method
  • Collaborated with a Sr. UX Designer through whiteboarding and sketching sessions
  • Developed low-fidelity prototypes, tested iterations in Power BI with real medical data
  • Built a design library to streamline UI development and consistency

Impact

  • Presented to stakeholders to secure hospital partnerships
  • Tested in real clinical settings by East Coast medical practitioners
  • Smooth handoff to a new design team with organized design system and prototypes
  • Contributed to the foundation of a customizable disease-management platform

Reflection

This was my first UX role, and it taught me how to balance business goals, technical feasibility, and user needs. I learned to scale features responsibly, support developer handoff (using Zeplin), and collaborate effectively across distributed teams. Most importantly, it was rewarding to design tools that directly improved patient care in the healthcare space.
